It is also known as an emollient and an astringent decreasing pain, swelling and tenderness. It has been said to stop diarrhea and help colitis. Lore has it that mullein is thought to be a protective herb planted by monasteries to banish the devil. Its long flowering stems were dipped in tallow in ancient times and used as torches in outdoor ceremonies. It is the herb associated with Saturn.
